Nathan G. Mains began his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association in September 2013. He is the sixth person to lead PSBA in their 128-year history. In his role, he leads a staff of more than 65 people who provide a range of publications, conferences, and seminars, as well as insurance programs, management and legal assistance, and advocacy services for local school officials. In addition, he serves as a
Managing Director/ CEO and a member of the board of the PSBA Trust, PSBA Trust Institute, and PSBA Insurance Company LLC and as Chief Executive Officer of Bent Creek Educational Services Corporation.
Mr. Mains serves as an ex-officio member, past Board Vice Chair, and past chair of the investment committee of the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS), a public pension fund with nearly $70 billion in assets. He serves as treasurer of the Pennsylvania School District Liquid Asset Fund (PSDLAF), a $8 billion fund created specifically to assist local education agencies and municipal entities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania manage their investment needs. Additionally, he serves as a member of the board of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), and as a member of the board of EasyProcure, a procurement card joint venture.
Prior to joining PSBA, Mr. Mains served is a variety of leadership roles within the nonprofit and lobbying sectors,
including work with Communities in Schools of Pennsylvania, Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania
Bankers Association, the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania, and the Winter Group, a government and public affairs consulting firm.
In 2023, Mr. Mains was named to the City and State Magazine Government Relations Power 100. In 2011, Mr. Mains was named one of the Top 40 Under 40 by the Central Penn Business Journal. He is a past Fellow of the Education Policy Leadership Center, the EPLC 2017 Leadership Award recipient and the 2015 recipient of the Lebanon Valley College Dr. June E. Herr Educator of the Year award. Mains served as a member of the K-12 advisory group to the transition team for Governor-elect Josh Shapiro in 2022.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lebanon Valley College, participated in the Harvard Business School’s Executive Education Program and attended Shippensburg University’s graduate school for communications. Mr. Mains resides in Mechanicsburg, PA, with his wife, Stacey, and their daughter.
